Since Martin Wallace’s A Few Acres of Snow is one of my all-time favorite games, I was quite keen to play his 2014 fantasy re-skin Mythotopia with Chad and Andrew last night!
It's got all of the area control, deckbuilder-y goodness of AFAOS but with the added dynamics of bumping up against more opponents and the ability to easily reserve cards for later use. The latter means that you're less likely to stall out when you want to do an invasion or City Build and you just wanna earmark something for later.
At the end of our game I was left wondering: other than jumping on a bunch of military Improvements and attacking your opponents for a bunch of lucrative six-point swings...what other strategy is there? I had a bash at an economic efficiency / resource flexibility thing and ended up in third.
Related to this: having all of the Improvement Cards available right off the jump in a communal pool might let you drill down on what kind of game you want to play but it also results in analysis paralysis as well as a mad scramble for those top shelf picks before someone else snatches them up.
Another reason I rate this lower then its predecessor: the generic fantasy theme is big-time“m’eh.” As a history buff, I appreciate how appropriately different the British and the French are to play in AFAOS. Maybe if the four different colors in Mythotopia had variable, asymmetrical powers, I would have liked this one a bit more.
Still, it was a fun experience that I would certainly tackle differently the next time out.
I give Mythotopia four pips out of six!
